Focus on your first 5 steps
When I first took up sprinting, I did so in order to complete a physical fitness competition I was determined to crush. I read and applied every single technique in regard to sprinting to give me the biggest edge possible over the other competitors and I trained daily for about 6 months.
At the start of one of the trials, a more seasoned athlete next to me gave me some advice that clicked like nothing else had, “Make your first 5 steps the fastest and straightest.”
Just a few seconds later I put his advice into practice and got my fastest time so far.
I quickly realized just how pivotal those initial strides were. They weren't simply steps, they were steering my entire race direction and setting the tone for the next 395 meters.
Those first 5 steps essentially determined whether I would succeed or fail right from the start.
If you can get up to speed within 5 steps going straight down the track, the rest of the race is just maintaining that speed, which is much easier than trying to get a last-second boost before the finish line.
Fast forward two years later, I found myself in a meeting with a trusted business mentor. He gave me a piece of advice that resonated with my sprinting experience because he told me about the importance of starting each and every day the exact same way. It was like hearing that seasoned athlete's advice all over again, but this time in a business context.
The lesson? The start of our day or week is just like those first 5 steps of the race.
Direction and acceleration are everything. 🎯
Every morning. Every Monday.
The start of each day holds the steering wheel to your overall productivity and success from that point forward.
"Working hard" makes for a great motto, but unless it's applied in the right direction, it's like sprinting off-course.
And if you accelerate too slowly, you may never hit top speed by the end of the day.
Your focus should be to establish a morning routine that gets you to top speed “within the first 5 steps.”
Be it the world's top athletes or successful entrepreneurs, they've all got a secret—they've discovered the right order, the right way to start their day.
Ever noticed billionaires tend to stick to routines? That's because great routines are repeatable and predictable. It's like crossing the same hurdles on the track each time, knowing exactly what it takes to leap over without wasting time or energy thinking about it or jumping too high.
Taking control of my run time relied on those first 5 steps. And it was about taking charge of my calendar, nailing those first few hours, and laying the groundwork for the rest of the day, that helped me catapult in business.
So, as you kick start your week, remember this: much like a sprinter's first 5 steps, the initial few hours of your day hold the power to shape your week. They're a launchpad, catapulting you towards success.
Every Monday is a fresh start, a new race. So, let's mark our starting lines and sprint towards success.
On your mark! 🏁
What is the best morning routine?
There isn’t one.
Some people don’t even have one and they seemingly do fine.
But you can’t argue with the benefits of having a daily ritual that allows you to get more done in a day and feel better as a result of it.
I have a morning routine framework that I’ve followed and adjusted for years that has tremendously helped me improve my output and mood. If this is something that you’d like me to break down into stages so that you can apply it to your own morning routine, leave a comment or send me an email! 👇
