Money is a target 🎯, NOT the GOAL 🏆 - TMR #34
We’re 4 months into 2024 right now, and more than likely you have deviated from your initial targets for the year. You’ve either adjusted due to over-/under-estimation, or you have changed the entire direction of your ship.
I was speaking with a business owner this past week who has seemingly had everything handed to him… let’s call him Josh.
Josh didn’t come from money, but according to him, “things just always work out.”
His agency grosses several million dollars annually and he doesn’t even set goals for himself, or his team.
He just wakes up, does work, maybe, and ends the day. Always just reacting to what comes up versus chasing anything.
Not the typical way of doing things, right? Or at least, not how most gurus tell you to structure your life for success.
Now, Josh came to me asking for specifics on how to structure his year because I had mentioned one of my favorite methods to him. And as we started running through the practice, he realized that he didn’t even know what to write for his goals!
Josh said, “Umm, $10 million dollars?”
Not a bad target for sure, but, this isn’t a goal. It’s a target. It’s a direction.
I told him that hitting $10 million will happen, but then what? What do you do with the $10 million?
The thing you do with $10 million is what your true goal is. What will $10 million add to your or your family’s life? THAT is the goal. That is the direction.
Josh had never thought of it like this before… so we ended the call and he put thought into it for several days.
He came back with a very specific goal for his family—and that’s what we wrote down.
$10M isn’t an arbitrary number anymore. It has meaning—and impact. Josh realized for the first time that he needs to work, and push, to make this happen.
So even though you’re likely done planning for the year, or the next 5 years, I encourage you to look past the “targets.” Look past the milestones. It could be money, it could be a client, it could be a business or a promotion— look PAST that.
What will THAT thing bring you and why is THAT thing important?
Set your goals FIRST, then set targets. You may realize that you’ve been chasing someone else’s goal this whole time.
What’s your goal?
