It doesn't get easier
When starting out on something new, you’ve probably heard many times that that more you do something the easier it becomes.
Teachers/trainers/mentors often say this as a way of encouraging you to stick with something that seems almost impossible in the beginning.
Think back and I bet you’ve likely experienced something like this in the past first-hand.
Remember how your first cold call was as nerve-racking as parallel parking for the first time with everyone watching you? But your 500th call was as easy as tying your shoes.
Or what about your first sales call? Geeezzzzz. It probably ended with YOU buying something from them 😅 . BUT your 100th sale took only 5 minutes and you sold an entire year paid in full.
This has probably even happened outside of business as well—think of driving a car, playing an instrument, speaking on stage, etc.
There are countless situations in your life where that thing you were doing got easier over time.
But, in reality, those things don’t actually become easier… in fact, they probably get more difficult.
You see, every time you do X, you incrementally improve on a skill.
You become better over time—not only at the explicit skill you’re seeking to improve on (sales, guitar, managing people) but also at the implicit skills you’re learning in the process (communication, patience, confidence, persistence, etc.).
And as you progress, you actively seek out more and more challenging aspects of the skill.
It certainly doesn’t get easier!
But YOU are getting better at the skill.
This is why you will still get nervous when doing these things (calls, speaking, presentations, etc.) — it’s still hard!
BUT, your level of skill and experience gets you through the “big event” and you come out the other side better than before.
I think it’s a huge mindset shift to stop thinking of things as getting easier because it means you are in control. And the more responsibility you take on the things you can control, the easier it becomes to carve out your own path forward.
This week — focus ONLY on improving your skill as you go through all of the difficult situations in your business. Even massive failures will be looked back on as stepping stones if you just keep improving your skills.
