Balance. ⚖ [TMR #37]
The past few weeks have been a blur.
Family and friends made TN part of their vacation and my family and I hosted people in my home for about 14 days straight.
Leading up to their stays, I was looking forward to it but at the same time I was constantly thinking to myself “how am I going to get any work done?”
I mean, this isn't *my* vacation, it’s theirs. I should be working…
The first day I did well with getting up earlier and staying up later to ensure my businesses were running full-speed, nothing was on fire, and I was able to clear up any blockers.
The next day, it slacked off some. By the 4th or 5th day, I wasn’t even checking my emails 😬
I found myself sitting on the porch, drinking coffee, talking with family and friends, and actually *kind of* enjoying it.
By the end of the two weeks, I was drinking flavored coffee and sitting in the sun daily. The total opposite of my usual black-coffee, cooped-up-on-my-office, working norm.
Good or bad? Well, both, but here’s what I’ve learned.
1. I wasn’t as balanced as I thought I was.
I’m a workaholic. I love work. I love working. Nothing wrong with that when things stay in balance.
What these two weeks taught me was that I was not taking time to enjoy my freedom, flexibility, family, and, friends.
I didn’t know how to relax.
I didn’t know how to just sit and enjoy the company of others.
And while there’s certainly a balance to be had, over these two weeks I learned that enjoying the fruits of my labor was not a bad thing.
For you, this means to take yourself out of the race every now and then.
Like fasting, but for work.
Enjoy it.
I’ve come back to work feeling refreshed with new ideas and a new drive to build even more.
2. My week was running me, not vice-versa
“Either you run the day, or the day runs you.” - Boss Baby
I’ve re-calibrated myself and my weeks to be more focused on my energy level and keeping it elevated.
After taking a breather, I’m much more productive and creative and there’s not even a comparison.
If you aren’t building a business that works for you, you’re building a prison.
I have a process I follow for building my weeks and I’ve recorded some content on it. If you think it’d help you, send me a message and I’ll send it your way (or subscribe to my YouTube channel and it will be there shortly!).
3. Food is a driver of success
Drinking flavored coffee and eating delicious pancakes for breakfast may sound like a luxury, but for me, it’s a detriment.
Yummy food and drink totally steals my mindset and puts me into a relaxed state.
Give me bland, protein-rich food and black coffee and I’ll go 100mph.
Give me a splash of “oatmilk” and cinnamon scones and I’m useless to the world.
This might be just me, but there is something to it.
Examine what you’re stuffing your face with and watch how you feel afterwards.
For me, monitoring what I eat and drink is more than a physiological benefit, but a mental benefit as well.
Stay sharp.
