TMR #5 - Are you a professional or what?
Explore how the discipline of performers can inspire a transformation in your business approach. Move beyond just doing to performing.
I went to a concert for the first time last week and it was…. amazing!
My brother told me I'd be hooked after my first one, and he was right. The energy, crowd, prep, aftershow, vibe, everything was just so intense!
While the music was absolutely incredible, what really left me impressed was the band’s energy AND the fact that no matter what happened earlier that day to any of the band members, they performed. And they went out 100%—100mph the entire time as if this was the first and last concert of their life.
It was amazing.
And convicting.
The more I watched the show go on the more I started seeing similarities in what these all-star performers were doing on this massive stage and what all of us should be doing as entrepreneurs.
I truly think that if you take even an ounce of what these performers have, your business will be miles ahead of the average competitor.
So with that being said, here are…
Four things that make performers stand out that will catapult your business forward
Performers don’t care what others think.
Performers show up no matter what and make the boring exciting.
Performers don’t do everything themselves.
Performers aren’t alone.
Taking these ideas into your business will put you miles ahead of the average competitor.
1. Don’t worry about what others think
It takes courage to get on stage in front of 10,000s of people, wearing a costume, speaking your mind, and under pressure to deliver an awesome show.
When was the last time to took an ego risk that was even remotely as big as this?
Hit record. Say what you need to say. If your opinions aren’t upsetting at least one person a day then you’re either not standing for anything or you’re just too quiet.
The moment you stop trying to please everyone will be the same moment you jump ahead of the crowd.
2. Show up no matter what and make the boring exciting
Every performer at the concert has a life that exists off the stage. They get sick, have rough days, lose sleep, and lose friends. But they’re jumping around on stage at 9pm, on schedule.
Not only that, but it’s a show that they have done 50 times already and they’re still singing songs they wrote 15 years ago…
True performers show up on time and execute as if it is their first AND last show.
The old songs and jokes feel genuine when they are performing for a crowd that has traveled across the country just to see the show.
How does that make us look?
In comparison, what you’re doing has much less room for error. Fewer missing pieces. Less pressure.
Do you show up 100% every day?
Do you perform no matter what?
Are you able to find joy in the mundane tasks that drive your business forward?
Are you an artist or not!?
Step out of your comfort zone. Be a freaking rock star in every sense of the word (except the coke).
Perform.
No excuses.
3. Don’t do everything yourself
There are so many moving pieces to plan and execute on a large show like what you see at a concert, and it was executed near-flawlessly. I say near-flawless because there was an instance of microphone feedback, and the show had to actually stop at one point because someone in the pit got injured.
BUT in both cases, it was picked up and resolved right away. The lead singer, after being interrupted in the middle of the song with the injury, said, “Are we professionals or what? Let's go!” And they instantly jumped back into the song where they left off, in sync. Perfect.
They are professionals.
But the performers don’t set up the stage, drive the buses, fix sound issues, or provide medical attention. They just perform.
If you would just simplify, eliminate, or delegate everything on your calendar except what YOU need to do, you would be MILES ahead.
4. Don’t go at it alone
While there are solo artists out there, they aren’t alone.
I’m not talking about stagehands here, but networking.
Friendships. Co-executives. Mentoring. Family support.
I wrote about this in a previous TMR—you’re not a genius. Your mind will only take you so far on its own, then it needs an outsider’s perspective to keep moving forward.
The sooner you realize that your success depends on bringing others into your social sphere (even “competitors” sometimes) the sooner you will start building toward success in your business AND your relationships.
Step up or get out
The amount of “average” businesses that exist in this world is insane! And you wonder why it feels so competitive! You're in the wrong crowd.
Whether you have 10,000 people watching you, or just 1.
Whether you've been doing the same mundane show every day, or just once.
Perform.
Be the best version of yourself every day and accept nothing less.
Let it bleed over into your business. Be the energy that drives the show.
Make the shift right now—this is your Monday Reset.
What now?
